During the last century, the shipping sector has gone through a number of transitions, and currently most ships run on fossil fuel. In order to oblige to new climate and emission policies, the shipping sector is now under pressure to decarbonize. There are several pathways forward regarding the choice of alternative technology, as these vary in suitability for different shipsizes and how far they travel. Being a global industry transporting 90% of the global trade, shipping is regulated on several governance levels and by several policy fields such as trade, transport, energy, etc. My PhD research aims to study sustainability transitions in the shipping sector, investigating impacts of multi-level policy mixes on transition pathways in different places.
