Gunnar Törnqvist


Professor in Economic Geography, Lund University, since 1967. Today Professor Emeritus. Has been engaged as expert in a number of Swedish Government Committees and Advisory Boards, and member of several Research Councils. Fellow of Steering and Coordination Committees of European Science Foundation. Since 1990 member of The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Scientific distinctions:

  • The Anders Retzius-medal in gold 2006. Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography.
  • The Thuréus-Prize. The Royal Scientific Society in Uppsala, 2006.

Research interests

Gunnar Törnqvist´s main research fields have been: Location theory, Innovation theory, Regional development, Economic and political geography of Europe, and Creativity in time and space. In these fields he has written 20 books and many book-chapters and peer-reviewed scientific articles. According to, the world´s largest library catalog: 186 publications in 4 languages and 1,711 library holdings.
