What does LUMID look for in a prospective student?

We review all applications based on the following three criteria: academic grades, the relevance of work experience on your résumé/curriculum vitae, and the statement of purpose.

Are applicants required to have a certain undergraduate major?

No. LUMID is an inter-disciplinary programme and values diversity of disciplines.

The programme has however benefitted particularly those who have a background in three broad areas: 1) social sciences, law and economics, 2) medicine and public health, and 3) natural sciences and engineering, and who wish to pursue a career working with advancing the sustainable development agenda within international organisations, governments, business or academia.

Are applicants required to have written a Bachelor’s thesis?

We do not request that you have written a Bachelor’s thesis as part of your Bachelor degree.

Are applicants required to have had relevant work experience? Does an internship or voluntary experience count?

LUMID lectures and seminars are in many cases based on group work and interactive learning, where students share their knowledge and experiences from various countries and professional settings. Therefore we look especially for applicants who have relevant work experience. This can include paid and unpaid work (including internship and voluntary experience). Field-based experience, e.g. working with local actors or conducting research low and middle-income countries, is highly valued.

Do you accept applicants directly from undergraduate schools?

Yes, but due to the competitiveness of the admission process successful applicants that apply directly from undergraduate schools often have parallel to their studies acquired relevant work experience.

If you are in their final year of your bachelor's studies at a university outside of Sweden, you have to submit a certificate from your university stating your current enrolment and that you are expected to graduate before August. Once you are admitted, the original degree certificate and a complete set of Transcript of Records will have to be registered onto the University Admissions website before registration in the programme. For more information please visit the University Admissions website.

When does the application open and close?

Precise information on important deadlines can found www.universityadmissions.se. Note that LUMID only has one application round each year.

Can I apply online?

Yes, all applications are to be sent in electronically to www.universityadmissions.se.

Do I have to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores?

All teachings and examinations of the programme are conducted in English. Applicant must therefore demonstrate English B/English 6 (advanced) language proficiency. Swedish students that have studied English B/English 6 at High School level and have sent in their grades to the University Admissions previously do not need to send in their grades again. For a full list of English language proficiency requirements and exemptions please check the latest information on the University Admissions' website.Should you have more questions in this regard, please contact the University Admissions.

Can I visit the campus and meet with a LUMID programme representative?

You are always welcome to visit the campus anytime of the year. We are a public university and our buildings are open to visitors. But please note that due to limited resources we, unfortunately, do not have the possibility to give you a private tour or provide personal comments on matters related to your application.

We do however strongly recommend that you attend the Lund University graduate fair on campus in November where you can meet programme representatives and get acquainted with all master programmes offered. You will also have the opportunity to attend a walking tour around the campus at this time.

If you do not have the possibility to come to Lund you might be able to catch Lund University representatives in a graduate fair close to you.

You are however welcome to contact us with any questions that might not have been covered on the programme website. Kindly note that personal contact with a LUMID representative does not play any role in the success of your application.

What is the average age of a LUMID student?

Between 27 and 30 years.

What percentage of LUMID students are international?

About 60-70 percent.

How long is the field placement?

The field placement lasts for a total of 20 weeks, during which students are required to complete academic tasks through an internship placement in an organisational setting and to conduct field-based research for their master’s thesis.

Is the field placement financed by the LUMID programme?

No. However, the students are insured against personal injury through the Swedish State´s insurance during Education Abroad (STUDENT-OUT) which provides a 24-hour a day cover equivalent to that of the general student insurance and travelling insurance coverage. The programme offer information and support to initiate internship opportunities with potential host organizations.

No. All LUMID courses are mandatory.

Is it possible to attend LUMID part-time? How much work are involved – hours per week?

The LUMID programme is a full-time study programme. The workload varies from course to course, especially when it comes to the hours of scheduled lectures. Students are expected to put 40 hours of work per week on their studies (classes, individual and group studies).
